openSUSE 42.3 was just released this last week.
Although 42.3 is considered a relatively minor upgrade from the prior
version (42.2), overall the openSUSE LEAP series (42.1, 42.2, 42.3)
has been considered extremely rock stable with advanced features and
flexibility not often seen in other distros.
Proposed topics
- Installation methods (and where to download from)
- The current distributions based on periodic releases and our rolling release.
- A multitude of supported Desktops. Currently I can demo the
following... KDE Plasma, Gnome, Mate, Enlightenment, XFCE, LXDE, LXQt
and may have additional like Cinnamon. If anyone has a particular
Desktop they're curious about, mention it and I'll see what might be
possible. For those who want an ultra-lightweight graphical interface
without a full Desktop, we also have IceWM which has a footprint and
memory usage almost the same as a text-mode no-graphics system.
- YaST. If you've used Mate for it's graphical management tools, then
you should be introduced to YaST. If you normally use other distros,
then YaST helps you install and configure almost anything without a
steep learning curve.
- Distro application enhancements available no matter the Desktop, the
things you won't likely find in any other distro (and a few which are
now also found in some other distros)
- Community Help for all levels of topics has always gotten high marks.
Throughout, I'll also be doing things in ways sometimes not permitted
in other distros that reflect the philosophy and easy to use approach
characteristic of openSUSE. Of course, even "the hard way" is
typically supported but openSUSE can be a thoroughly easy experience
for both those who require bleeding edge and rock stable Production
reliability.
And, if anyone has special requests related to openSUSE, message me
and I'll see if I can fit it into the evening.
