After nearly a year of fighting the good fight I now have in my hands a
check for the amount that was in the Vanguard account a couple of years
ago. I must have a good 20 hours invested in waiting on the phone,
filling out forms, mailing things, etc. So glad it wasn't all
irretrievably escheated to the state!
The story: After the former administration of SDCS lost interest and
then our former treasurer passed away a number of things fell through
the cracks. Among them was access to the Vanguard account which we have
had since 1981. Apparently nobody had access to the account and nobody
accessed the account for over a year. Vanguard was also presumably
unable to reach anyone. So they closed the account and sent us a check.
I never discovered where the check went. I never found it in the SDCS
mailbox. But Vanguard confirms it was never cashed. So I had to give
them meeting minutes, articles of incorporation (which nobody was in
possession of so I had to send off to the State of CA for that), fill
out a form to open a new account, prove who I was, making many followup
calls each step of the way to keep things moving, etc. etc. But now it's
done. So I'm going to take this check down to Wells Fargo and deposit
it.
Anyone to whom SDCS may owe money please contact me with receipts etc.
and we will get you squared away. I know I am owed a few hundred, our
treasurer Rod Hamby is owed, and anyone else please get in touch.
We also finally have a new domain name. A few years ago when the old
SDCS administration had lost interest and the KPLUG crew were trying to
pick up the pieces our old and very valuable sdcs.org domain was allowed
to lapse. :( So I have just picked up sandiegocomputersociety.org. I
plan to get a github/pelican site up and running for it although I can't
make any promises on when it will be finished.
But that's more progress in one month than we've seen in a long time!
Next goals are to get the websites redone/hosted and finish getting
migrated off of sparky.
Concurrently we need to be contacting other computing/technology groups
(meetup groups etc) and pitching them on the value of being an SDCS SIG.
KPLUG alone won't carry SDCS forever. But what is the value of being an
SDCS SIG? We need to work on that. Ideas?
