This is not the first project of this kind - must be at the least the
third I have come across so far. However, all of these projects suffer
from the same critical flaw: the packaged GSM modem module which they
use as their engine (the part that provides cellular connectivity) is
an impenetrable proprietary black box with FOTA backdoors. My response
to all of those DIY phone projects (ZeroPhone is another currently
popular one) is that they should get rid of that proprietary modem
module and use my published-source modem instead:

As the present moment my FCDEV3B V1 modem boards are sold out, but I
am currently in the process of getting FCDEV3B V2 boards made (the
difference is a minor fix involving power-saving sleep modes) and I am
hoping to have them available shortly after New Year.
